Road Safety Training Empowers Government Drivers in Songwe

Drivers employed by the government and public institutions in the Songwe Region have been urged to uphold road discipline and prioritize safety. The goal is to prevent avoidable accidents and protect all road users. This initiative forms part of an ongoing effort by the Regional Traffic Police to enhance driver awareness and responsibility.
The seminar, held on June 1, 2025, at the Regional Commissioner’s office in Songwe, provided practical education on traffic laws and professional conduct for drivers handling official vehicles.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Charles Bukombe, head of the Songwe Regional Traffic Police, led the session. He emphasized the importance of drivers acting not only as operators of vehicles but also as advisors to the leaders they serve.

He called on drivers to be proactive in reminding their passengers—especially high-profile government officials—about adhering to road safety rules. This, he said, is key in preventing road accidents and maintaining the integrity of public service.
Core Messages Shared
SSP Bukombe underlined three main responsibilities of every government driver:
1. Obey Road Signs and Laws: Drivers must fully understand and follow all road markings and traffic signals.
2. Keep Learning: As vehicle technology evolves, drivers need to stay updated through continuous learning.
3. Plan for the Future: Beyond daily driving tasks, drivers should consider long-term goals for their careers and personal development.

Insights from the District Level
Assistant Inspector of Police Anton Sabasaba, who oversees traffic in Mbozi District, further elaborated on the topics discussed. He focused on:
- Dangers of Over-Speeding: High speeds reduce reaction time and increase accident severity.
- Illegal Overtaking: Many crashes occur when vehicles pass others in prohibited zones.
- Residential Areas: Extra caution must be taken near pedestrian zones and homes.
These points served as practical reminders that even experienced drivers must regularly reflect on safety measures.
Reinforcing the Law
Corporal Chika Sanda and Corporal Maganga Kalulumya also took the stage. They walked participants through the key traffic regulations applicable in Tanzania. Drivers were advised to keep a copy of the national traffic law handbook with them as a quick reference tool.
Carrying this handbook, they explained, not only helps with compliance but also strengthens decision-making during emergencies or tricky road situations.
Drivers’ Feedback and Engagement
One of the highlights of the seminar was an open floor session for questions, advice, and feedback. Mr. Fungafunga Njovu, a driver from Tunduma Town Council, thanked the police for the informative seminar.
He requested the continuation of such trainings, stating that they greatly enhance understanding and cooperation between drivers and law enforcement. He also pledged support in promoting road safety in his workplace and beyond.
